You can choose between essential oils to add scent to your bath salt. Essential oils are plant fragrances or scents derived from nature. They have therapeutic qualities and when combined with other bath ingredients such as essential waxes, they can create wonderful scents that help relieve tension and discomfort.
To create your first bath salt, fill a measuring cup with enough liquid bath stuff to cover a medium-size piece of clothing. Add a few drops of essential oils into the water. Leave the mixture on the surface of the cloth for about one minute, then dip it into the bowl of a large plastic pan filled with cold water. Fill the pan with about two inches of the mixture and place the pan in the microwave for about thirty seconds to soften the mixture.
Pour the soap mixture into two separate containers. Pour the undiluted essential oils into a clean container. Add a small handful of your table salt into the second container and mix together with the rest of the essential oils. Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes to blend. The bath salt will solidify when it has cooled down. It will keep its color and texture throughout the season.
If necessary, you can substitute different essential minerals for calcium, magnesium, or potassium. For example, if you are low on magnesium, add a pinch of dried thyme, black pepper, and salt (sodium chloride). If you are very low on potassium, add lemon juice, lemon wedges, and salt (salt). If you want your bath salt to have an exotic flavor, add cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg to your recipe. Some exotic minerals that you might consider for your salt include agave nectar (also known as sugarcane) and Mexican red rock salt.
Many different types of salt crystals exist, but none is as common or useful as dead sea salt. Its mineral content is well known and well documented. The salt’s other important characteristic–its ability to absorb trace minerals–has led to its use in many different cottages and other private houses all over the world. The minerals from dead sea salt have been found to be even more beneficial than magnesium. These minerals are called “free radical scavengers”. This means that they neutralize the effects of free radicals.
Essential oils are used in aromatherapy and other alternative treatments. When essential oils are massaged into the skin, they penetrate the skin much more deeply than through any other means. Using essential oil massages can increase the effectiveness of other alternative remedies for dry skin. For instance, Rosemary essential oil has been shown to assist the healing of sunburn and minor wounds. It is also helpful when applied topically to the skin.
One of the most important properties of salts is their ability to stimulate natural healing. Most essential oils can work very well when massaged into the skin. However, it is salts that work the best because they are easily absorbed and penetrate easily. Essential oils will not penetrate into the skin as deeply as the salt will. As a result, it is these salts which are often recommended for natural healing and treatment of a variety of skin problems.
