General Locomotive Chase Monument
One of the best things to do in Graysville is to visit the General Locomotive Chase Monument. The monument commemorates one of the most famous railroad events in US history. On April 12, 1862, Union Army volunteers commandeered a train known as the General and took it north towards Chattanooga, Tennessee. As the train travelled, it damaged the line between Georgia and Tennessee, so Union troops and Confederate troops had to pursue them on foot and locomotives. The entire chase lasted 87 miles.
The General Locomotive Chase Monument is located along a historic railroad. The railroad was once operated by the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis railroad, which later became CSX Transportation. This railroad was originally owned by the State of Georgia, but it was leased twice to the Nashville, Chattanooga & St.Louis Railroad. The railroad was then absorbed by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad system, which later became part of the Family Lines conglomerate and merged with CSX Transportation in the early 1980s. The railroad is also the site of several historic markers.
The General Locomotive Chase Monument commemorates the dramatic events of the 1861 train robbery. The famous event happened in Georgia, near Chattanooga. Andrews and his men had to abandon the train, but Fuller remained on board, and he followed the General in the train’s path. Ultimately, Andrews and the rest of his crew were caught and executed.
Rock City Gardens

Located on Pine Grove Road between Ringgold and Fort Oglethorpe, Jack Mattox Recreation Complex offers visitors a range of recreational activities. The park features lighted ballfields, walking trails and a nine-hole disc golf course. In addition, it also features a fishing pond. The complex also hosts many community events, including an annual baseball / softball tournament.
